Since 2012, the U.S. based philanthropic organization The Hellenic Initiative has been on a mission to support sustainable economic renewal for Greeks across the globe. Many Greeks have fled the country since the crisis, numbers suggest around 600,000, including much of its young talent. Its major fundraising gala takes place September 29 in New York City.
The evening, which honors UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Marianna V. Vardinoyannis (founder of the Marianna Vardinoyannis Foundation, ELPIDA’s Association of Friends of Children With Cancer, and the ORAMA ELPIDAS Volunteer Bone Marrow Donor Registry) and The Hellenic Entrepreneurship Award, will include dinner, dancing, and a rather famous host, otherwise known as Sakis Rouvas.
The Hellenic Initiative is geared towards helping the Greek diaspora community raise funds and awareness for Greece, and the Gala will raise money to go towards entrepreneurial programs in Greece, Greek NGOs that foster economic development opportunities, and crisis relief efforts for struggling Greek communities.
One can’t argue with the mission, and past investments from The Hellenic Initiative have proven successful. Ergon, which has restaurants, delis and sells “paradosiaka,” aka artisanal traditional Greek food products, has grown into a worldwide retail network since receiving support from The Hellenic Initiative. (editor’s note: I would personally be VERY into seeing these become the “Eataly” of all things Greek… where’s the US-based Ergon?)
In case you’re curious about the numbers… aka how much of this money makes it out into the world, the numbers are impressive. The Hellenic Entrepreneurship Award, (funded and administered by THE LIBRA GROUP), has granted more than $5.6 million to 19 Greek startups in the last four years. The 2017 award winners will have the opportunity to share $1.49 million. A sizable investment, given that it also includes mentoring and business support.

On a less serious note, it seems important to mention that there will be delicious Greek wines at the event donated by Cava Inos as well as a silent auction. So far, they’ve teased that items by Eleni Kyriacou, a Conceptual Fashion Designer and the current costumier of The Olympic Torch Lighting and Handover Ceremonies, will be available at the auction…
